Wifi

Mukta

OnAir

Intranet

Intranet

bijoybook

Curiosity Rover Digs Up Shiny Particles on Mars

by SPACE.com Staff
Date: 18 October 2012 Time: 09:37 AM ET

NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity has found some more bright stuff on the Red Planet, scientists say.

The Curiosity rover had dumped out a recent sample of Mars dirt after spotting shiny particles inside the hole dug by the shovel-like scoop on its robotic arm. Mission scientists were concerned that the bright material might be debris from the rover itself, so they ordered Curiosity to toss the Mars sample as a safety precaution, mission managers said in a statement.

As it turns out, the bright particles are actual Martian in origin, they added.

Small Debris on the Ground Beside Curiosity
This image from the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) camera on NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity shows a small bright object on the ground beside the rover at the “Rocknest” site. The object is just below the center of this image. It is about half an inch (1.3 centimeters) long. The rover team has assessed this object as debris from the spacecraft, possibly from the events of landing on Mars. The image was taken during the mission’s 65th Martian day, or sol (Oct. 11, 2012).
CREDIT: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS

Curiosity is scooping up Mars dirt in a spot called “Rocknest” in preparation to deliver the first samples to a pair of instruments on its car-size body. The rover scooped its first Mars sample on Oct. 7, but further work was delayed when the rover’s cameras spotted a bright object —likely a piece of plastic —on the ground in the area.

Scientists had cleared Curiosity to start scooping Mars dirt again ahead of the first sample study when they spotted the new bright material. Curiosity’s initial Mars dirt scoops are designed to clean the rover’s sampling system. [Mars Rover Curiosity’s Latest Amazing Photos]

“Other small pieces of bright material in the Rocknest area have been assessed as debris from the spacecraft,” NASA officials said in a statement Monday (Oct. 15). “The science team did not want to put spacecraft material into the rover’s sample-processing mechanisms.”

A new review of the latest bright material suggested it is actually a Mars phenomenon, and not litter from Curiosity. With that analysis in hand, rover scientists cleared Curiosity to take a third scoopful of Mars dirt.

“Confidence for going ahead with the third scooping was based on new assessment that other bright particles in the area are native Martian material,” NASA officials said. “One factor in that consideration is seeing some bright particles embedded in clods of Martian soil.”

Curiosity’s third scoop of Mars dirt will be the first sample to actually be processed by the rover’s Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument, known as CheMin. A later Mars sample will be scooped up and deposited inside the rover’s Sample Analysis at Mars, or SAM, instrument.

The CheMin and SAM tools are two of the core instruments on Curiosity designed to determine if Mars may have once been habitable for microbial life.

The $2.5 billion Mars rover Curiosity has been exploring the Red Planet since Aug. 5, when it landed inside the planet’s vast Gale Crater. Currently, the rover is driving toward its first major science target, a spot called “Glenelg” that offers a glimpse at interesting Martian terrain, scientists said.

The rover is about the size of a Mini Cooper car, making it the largest rover ever sent to another world. Curiosity is expected to spend at least two Earth years exploring the Red Planet.

NASA will provide an update on Curiosity’s science work on Mars today (Oct. 18) in a teleconference at 3 p.m. EDT (1900 GMT). You can listen in on the teleconference via SPACE.com’s NASA feed here.

Article: Analytic Thinking Can Promote Atheism

Stephanie Pappas, LiveScience Senior Writer

Date: 26 April 2012 Time: 02:00PM ET

Deliberate analytical thinking can cause people to believe less in God, according to a new study. The researchers, who found that religious belief arises from gut feelings, were quick to say their study was not a referendum on the value of religion. Both analytical thinking and the intuitive processing that seems to promote religious beliefs are important, said study researcher Will Gervais.

“Both are useful tools,” said Gervais, a doctoral candidate in psychology at the University of British Columbia. “Ultimately, these studies are looking at cognitive factors that might influence belief or disbelief, but they don’t have anything to say about the inherent rationality or worth of religion.”

Head versus heart

Psychologists have found that people process information through two distinct systems. One is the analytical system, marked by deliberate, logical processing. The intuitive system, on the other hand, uses mental shortcuts and gut feelings, Gervais said.

Earlier studies have shown that people who tend to go with their gut are more likely to believe in God than analytical types are. Gervais and his UBC colleague Ara Norenzayan reached the same finding by giving people a test to determine whether they were more analytical or more intuitive. For example, one question asked, “If it takes five machines five minutes to make five widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?”

The intuitive, go-with-your-gut answer would be “100.” But the analytical, do-the-math process gets you the correct answer of five minutes. People who came to the analytical answer also reported less religious belief than those who offered the intuitive response. [8 Ways Religion Impacts Your Life]

Thinking analytically But Gervais and Norenzayan also wanted to see if thinking style, in addition to being associated with religious belief, could actually cause changes in belief. In a series of four studies, the researchers subtly influenced participants to think more analytically. In one study, participants looked at a photo of either Rodin’s sculpture “The Thinker” or “Discobolus,” a Greek sculpture of a man throwing a discus. A pilot study had shown that viewing only “The Thinker” made people more likely to think analytically, while viewing the discus thrower did not sway anyone one way or another. Is belief in God good for people? Without question. For the most part. I have my doubts. No. View Results Share This

In two other studies, participants played word games with either neutral words such as “hammer” and “shoe” or analytical words such as “think” and “reason.” After these priming activities, participants answered questions about their religious beliefs.

In a final study, the participants simply answered the religion questions on a questionnaire printed in either a difficult-to-read font or an easy-to-read font. (Reading a hard-to-decipher style of lettering is known to boost analytical thinking.)

The surveys included statements that participants had to rate based on their level of agreement or disagreement, such as: “I believe in God”; “When I am in trouble, I find myself wanting to ask God for help“; and “I just don’t understand religion.”

The studies involved more than 650 participants in the United States and Canada. In every study, participants who were prompted to think analytically were less likely to report religious beliefs, such as believing in God, than participants who saw neutral stimuli.

“The overall take-home message is that religious beliefs are supported by a variety of intuition, but if you can get people to engage in analytic thinking, that promotes religious disbelief,” Gervais said.

Other factors, including culture and social norms, also influence religious belief and atheism, Gervais said. He and his colleagues aren’t sure how analytical thinking disrupts faith-promoting intuition. It’s possible that the analytic thinking might interfere directly with intuitive thoughts about life having a purpose or there being life after death, for example. Or these intuitive beliefs could still exist, but their cognitive link to religious belief could be broken by analytical thoughts, Gervais suggested. Or it might simply be that analytical thinking triggers a conscious “override” in which people talk themselves out of their beliefs.

“It’s important to emphasize that everybody has these two systems,” Gervais added. “Everybody can think intuitively and analytically, and it’s not the case that the intuitive system is always wrong and the analytical is always right.”
